Ali Mohamed Shein is a medical doctor and a member of the ruling Chama Cha Mapinduzi (CCM) party, originally from the island of Pemba. He served as Vice President of Tanzania from 2001 to 2010 before becoming the 7th President of Zanzibar in 2010, a post he held until 2020.

On 31 October, Ali Mohamed Shein was appointed President of Zanzibar for a five year term. He has held a number of important positions, beginning with his appointment as Member of the House of Representatives for the Mkanyageni Constituency on 29 October 1995, followed by his appointment as Deputy Minister of Health on 12 November 1995 and his appointment as Minister of State, President's Office, Constitution, and Good Governance in Zanzibar on 22 November 2000. In July 2001, he was appointed Vice President of Tanzania and on 9 July 2010, Shein was nominated by the ruling party CCM as presidential candidate. Following the vote on 31 October 2010, Shein was elected a new President of Zanzibar, with 50.1% of the vote.
