Apoorva Lakhia was born and brought up in Ahmedabad, India, and educated at the Lawrence School, Sanawar. After studying filmmaking in New York University, he had the opportunity to assist Mira Nair on The Perez Family, but instead he dropped out of the course to pursue this opportunity. He also worked as an assistant on American films such as The Ice Storm, A Perfect Murder and Addicted to Love.

Apoorva Lakhia is a film director best known for his Hindi films such as Mumbai Se Aaya Mera Dost (2002), Shootout at Lokhandwala (2007), Mission Istanbul (2008), and Haseena Parkar (2017). Prior to becoming a director, Apoorva was an assistant director for Ashutosh Gowariker's period epic film Lagaan: Once Upon a Time in India (2001). Following Farhan Akhtar's recommendation, Apoorva was chosen to work on the film due to his Hollywood experience. After Lagaan, Apoorva worked as the second assistant director for Kama Sutra: A Tale of Love (1996). He has since written and directed several of his own features. Most notable are the remake of Man on Fire (2005), and a remake of the breakthrough film Zanjeer (2013). His most recent work was Haseena Parkar, a biopic starring Shraddha Kapoor and Siddhant Kapoor.
