[Helen Skelton] Biography

Helen Skelton is an English television presenter and actress who is best known for her work on the BBC children’s programme Blue Peter from 2008 until 2013. She is currently presenting the BBC series Countryfile and previously co-hosted two series of the BBC One programme Holiday Hit Squad, alongside Angela Rippon and Joe Crowley. She has also presented the daytime series The Instant Gardener for two series. Skelton is a well experienced presenter, having presented a number of shows throughout her career.

Helen Skelton was born on 19 July 1983 in Carlisle, Cumbria, England. She was raised on a dairy farm in the village of Kirkby Thore and attended its local Primary School and Appleby Grammar School. She went on to gain a BA degree in journalism from Cumbria Institute of the Arts. During her time at college, she also worked as an extra on the TV shows Coronation Street and Cutting It. Skelton has stated that if she had not become a broadcaster, she would have become a teacher. Her brother Gavin has been a professional footballer and also player-manager.

Helen Skelton first started her career in public relations, before deciding to move into journalism and working in the newsroom at CFM Radio. In 2005, she earned the title of BBC Radio Cumbria's youngest ever breakfast presenter. She went on to become the 33rd presenter of children's news programme Newsround and its sports-based edition, Sportsround. In 2008, Skelton was revealed as a presenter of Blue Peter, a role she held until 2013 when she was replaced by Radzi Chinyanganya.

During her time at Blue Peter, Skelton covered a range of correspondent tasks including reporting from Wimbledon Championships. She went on to become a presenter of live FA Women's Super League football matches for BT Sport, as well as keeping her roles as a BBC reporter. In 2012, Skelton took part in a Christmas Special edition of the BBC One programme Strictly Come Dancing, and in 2015 she was a co-presenter on daytime BBC One series The Instant Gardener. In 2016, she presented swimming coverage for the Summer Olympics alongside Rebecca Adlington, Adrian Moorhouse, Andy Jameson and Mark Foster, and guest presented five editions of Lorraine on ITV in October that year.

In 2022, Skelton will be competing in the twentieth series of Strictly Come Dancing, partnered with professional dancer Gorka Marquez. She also hosted coverage of the 2016 European Swimming Championships, co-presented two series of Holiday Hit Squad in 2013/14, two editions of Walks with My Dog on More4 in 2017, and has presented Tonight: Kids V Career and London Marathon Highlights show on the BBC. Skelton also published her debut novel, Amy Wild: Amazon Summer, in May 2015. Her other current roles include a weekly slot on BBC Radio 5 Live every Sunday and co-hosting BBC Radio 5 Drive Time. From 14 August 2022, she will take over from Laura Whitmore and become the new presenter of BBC Radio 5 Live’s morning show.
