At the age of 23, Michael Schoeffling rose to international fame playing the role of Jake Ryan, the popular yet sensitive high school athlete adored by Molly Ringwald's character in the teen classic movie Sixteen Candles. 2004 marked the 20-year anniversary of the film's US premiere, and for Valentine's Day, The Washington Post ran an article entitled "Real Men Can't Hold a Match to Jake Ryan of Sixteen Candles" which spoke of the character's lasting popularity. A few of his notable roles after Sixteen Candles include Vision Quest, Mermaids, the action movie Let's Get Harry, and the 1991 movie Wild Hearts Can't Be Broken.

Michael Schoeffling was born and raised in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania and South Jersey. After graduating from Cherokee High School in Evesham Township, he went on to attend Temple University in Philadelphia, majoring in liberal arts. After a career in modelling for GQ, paid for by photographer Bruce Weber, he went on to study at the Lee Strasberg Theatre Institute in Manhattan.
