He has been credited for propelling Latin pop music to mainstream recognition, paving the way for a large number of Latin artists to achieve global success. Martin began his musical career at twelve, as a member of Puerto Rican boy band Menudo, and has since established himself as a pop icon and sex symbol with many successful singles and chart-toppers, 11 Billboard Hot Latin Songs number-one songs, and over 200 awards including two Grammy Awards and five Latin Grammy Awards. He has also starred in hit soap opera "General Hospital" and the Broadway revival of the musical "Evita". Besides his musical career, Martin is an activist who focuses on LGBT rights and fighting against human trafficking, having founded The Ricky Martin Foundation.

[Ricky Martin] Early life

Enrique Martín Morales was born on December 24, 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to a former psychologist and accountant. His parents divorced when he was two years old, and he had two older maternal half-brothers and two younger paternal half-brothers and a younger half-sister. He has Spanish Basque and Canarian descent and some Corsican origin through his paternal grandmother. Martin grew up Catholic and started singing at age six with wooden spoons as make-believe microphones. He attended a bilingual Catholic grade school and appeared in television commercials when he was only nine years old.

Martin reflected on his time spent with his family as a child, "Every time I find myself in front of an audience, be it twenty people or one hundred thousand, once again I feel the energy that consumed me back at the family gatherings of my youth." He starred in 11 commercials in a year and a half and sang a variety of songs including those by Menudo, Led Zeppelin, Journey, and REO Speedwagon. His maternal grandfather was a poet and those closest to him called him "Kiki", a nickname derived from Enrique. He was an average student in the grade school, yet he received recognition for his early appearances in television commercials.

His mother supported him when he came out, and his journey to self-acceptance has made him aware of the importance of finding what makes people happy and sticking with it. Since 1997, he has practiced yoga and meditation and has also followed a vegetarian diet to reduce his cholesterol from a young age. His financial success has allowed him to purchase several properties in various countries, with his current residence being an 11,300-square-foot mansion in Beverly Hills. He and Yosef then welcomed daughters Lucia and Renn. In 2021, he revealed that he still believes in God and is devoted to self-discovery and growth.
