Enrique Martín Morales was born on December 24, 1971, in San Juan, Puerto Rico to a former psychologist and accountant. His parents divorced when he was two years old, and he had two older maternal half-brothers and two younger paternal half-brothers and a younger half-sister. He has Spanish Basque and Canarian descent and some Corsican origin through his paternal grandmother. Martin grew up Catholic and started singing at age six with wooden spoons as make-believe microphones. He attended a bilingual Catholic grade school and appeared in television commercials when he was only nine years old.

Martin reflected on his time spent with his family as a child, "Every time I find myself in front of an audience, be it twenty people or one hundred thousand, once again I feel the energy that consumed me back at the family gatherings of my youth."
